STEM Student Support
Through the year, students may need a variety of supports, and options are available should the students need them.
There is a dedicated STEM Counselor, Mrs. Denton (please see her page on the website).
For students who are enrolled in the Special Education Program and who need support for their Individualized Education Plans, the Special Education Department Chair, Caitlin Hall, helps to assist, manage cases, and co-teach classes (along with other members of the Special Education Department). She may be reached at [email protected].
Some students may need language support as they have recently moved from another country or have been, up to this point, enrolled in an International Academy (IA) Program and are assimilating the new educational structure. There is a STEM support class which focuses specifically on Biology terminology but also supports STEM English Honors and other STEM classes. Marisa Silva spearheads this class. She may be reached at [email protected].
Foundations of Literacy is a class to support students who need to improve their reading skills. In this class, we aim to reinforce concepts learned in the students' English 9 class. Specific strategies to increase reading comprehension are addressed, and students are asked to apply these strategies to their independent reading. Free choice, independent reading is part of almost every class period since the amount of time that students read for enjoyment positively correlates with higher reading test scores.
